Banff National Park, Rockies
The osprey (Pandion haliaetus), also known as the fish hawk, is a large bird of prey specialized for fishing. In Banff National Park, they are often seen near lakes and rivers during the summer months.
Identification
Large (2 ft long, 5–6 ft wingspan), with dark brown upperparts and white underparts. A distinctive dark stripe runs through the eye. Ospreys are distinct among hawks for their reversible outer toe and barbed pads on their feet, which help them grip slippery fish.
Habitat and Behavior
Ospreys build large stick nests on top of dead trees, power poles, or specialized nesting platforms near water. They hunt by soaring over the water and diving feet-first to catch fish. They are migratory, spending their winters in Central and South America.
Viewing
Look for ospreys near the Bow River or patrolling the shores of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Their high-pitched, whistling calls are often heard near their nesting sites.
