Mount Tuzo

Last updated:

Valley of the Ten Peaks

Mount Tuzo is Peak Seven of the Ten Peaks above Moraine Lake, near the western half of the valley wall. In Samuel Allen’s original Stoney Nakoda sequence it was Sagowa, the word for seven.

Naming

The mountain was renamed in 1907 for Henrietta Tuzo, after her 1906 ascent with Swiss guide Christian Kaufmann. It is one of the more memorable later name changes in the valley because it honored a living woman mountaineer, which was unusual for the period.

Position

Mount Tuzo stands between Mount Allen and Deltaform in the high western half of the Wenkchemna wall. From Sentinel Pass and Wenkchemna Pass, it is easier to distinguish than from the lower Rockpile, where it reads mainly as part of the collective barrier of peaks.

Meaning in the valley

Mount Tuzo helps illustrate the full naming pattern of Moraine Lake. Allen’s original Nakoda numbering survives in the memory of the valley; later commemorative names survive on the map. Both histories are present at once.
