Mount Lefroy

Lake Louise

A striking peak on the Continental Divide in Banff National Park, paired with Mount Victoria across Abbot Pass. Mount Lefroy (3,423 m) was named in 1897 for Sir John Henry Lefroy, a British scientist who conducted magnetic surveys in Canada. The peak forms the western wall of the Abbot Pass col and is visible from Lake Louise and the Plain of Six Glaciers.

Mount Lefroy and Mount Victoria were the site of the first fatal accident in Canadian mountaineering when Philip Stanley Abbot fell during the final pitch of an ascent attempt in August 1896. Abbot Pass and the Abbot Pass Hut (1922, demolished 2022) built there were named in his memory; his death prompted the CPR to hire Swiss guides.
