Lipalian Chutes
Steep advanced chutes in the Larch area (Run #149), named for Mount Lipalian (2,682 m), which pioneering mountaineer Arthur Coleman named in 1884; he referred to it as a “commonplace mountain” compared to its loftier neighbours. The name derives from the “Lipalian Unconformity”; a geological term coined by Charles Doolittle Walcott to describe the gap in the fossil record between the Precambrian and Cambrian periods. The chutes are prized for their consistent snow-holding capacity, a result of the mountain’s northeast-facing aspect.
