First 90 minutes

Orient first, commit second

The first 90 minutes decide whether Lake Louise feels smooth or chaotic. Start with the practical questions: “Where am I, how am I getting back, and what do I need to verify before committing?”

If you are at the Park and Ride

  • Confirm your shuttle time, return route, and whether your ticket covers Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, or both.

  • Check whether you need the Lake Connector and how late it runs for your ticket type.

  • Do not plan a long hike until you know the last return option.

  • If something does not match your booking, ask the operator or Parks Canada staff before boarding.

If you are in Lake Louise Village

  • Use the village as the practical base: washrooms, food, transit checks, gear check, and route reset.

  • If you have no lake transport solved, check Parking full before driving uphill.

  • If you are hiking from the village, choose a village-start option such as Tramline, Louise Creek, or Bow River Loop only if weather, footwear, daylight, and group energy fit.

If you are already at Lake Louise Lakeshore

  • First 20 minutes: get oriented, find washrooms, check weather, and decide whether this is a lakeshore day or a trail day.

  • Next 30 minutes: if hiking, confirm time, footwear, layers, water, bear spray, and return deadline.

  • Final 40 minutes: start the route or downgrade the plan. If you are still debating after an hour, choose the easier option.

If you are at Moraine Lake

  • Confirm your return transport before you leave the arrival area.

  • If you only have a short window, Rockpile plus the lakeshore is enough.

  • Do not start Larch Valley, Sentinel Pass, Eiffel Lake, or Wenkchemna Pass unless time, weather, footwear, food, water, and return logistics are already solved.

Quick orientation checks

  • Weather for current conditions and mountain forecast context.

  • Roads before driving to Banff, Canmore, Calgary, Field, or Golden.

  • Trail chooser if the group needs a route under a realistic time limit.

  • Gear list helper if someone is missing layers, traction, water, or bear spray.

When to verify

If the official source, shuttle return, weather, daylight, or group energy is unclear, choose the smaller plan. Lake Louise rewards a clean two-hour visit more than an overbuilt day that breaks at the logistics layer.
