Resort and lake in one day

Skiing in the morning, lakeshore in the afternoon, how to make it work

Last updated:

The ski resort and Lake Louise lakeshore are both in the Lake Louise area, but they are not the same place. They are on different roads, accessed differently, with no direct connection between them. Combining both in one day is completely doable, people do it regularly, but it requires a clear plan or someone ends up waiting in the wrong parking lot.

The geography

The ski resort sits on Whitehorn Mountain, accessed from the village via Whitehorn Road. Lake Louise lakeshore is reached from Lake Louise Drive, which branches off in the opposite direction. The drive between the two is about 10–15 minutes, but they do not share parking or shuttle service. A resort shuttle from Banff goes to the ski resort. A Roam Transit bus goes to the lakeshore. They are different destinations.

The most workable version of this day

Morning ski, afternoon lake. Leave the resort between 1pm and 2pm, before the end-of-day crunch. Drive or shuttle to the lakeshore. Walk the lake in the afternoon light, which is often better than morning light for the glacier and the peaks. Return from the lakeshore before the end of the afternoon.

This works well in winter when the lakeshore is quiet and accessible without the summer shuttle system. In summer the lakeshore requires a pre-booked shuttle, which complicates fitting it around a ski day.

If your group is splitting up

One of the most common mixed-group scenarios: skiers go to the resort, non-skiers go to the lakeshore, everyone meets up later. This works fine with a clear plan:

  • Agree on where you meet and when, pick a specific place (resort base lodge, the village, or the lakeshore) and a specific time. "Around 3" is not specific enough when cell coverage is unreliable.
  • Each group needs their own transport, the non-skier going to the lakeshore cannot use the resort shuttle. They need Roam Transit or a separate car.
  • In winter, lakeshore parking is free but fills by 8am on busy days. If the non-skier group is driving, sort out lakeshore parking timing before the skiing group leaves on the resort shuttle.
  • In summer, the lakeshore requires a pre-booked shuttle. Book this well in advance. See summer logistics for the shuttle system and Lake Connector.
  • Cell coverage is spotty, in the valley between the resort and the lakeshore, and at the lakeshore itself. Plan a backup location to meet if you cannot reach each other.

Meeting at the resort for lunch

A clean midday meeting point: the skiers and non-skiers regroup at the resort base area after a morning at the lakeshore. Then everyone does the afternoon together, more skiing, gondola, or village depending on the group.

If you want to build the day around the gondola as well, check Sightseeing Gondola for the current sightseeing operation and ticket details.

End-of-day logistics

If you are driving between the two areas at the end of the day, plan to leave the resort before 3:30pm to stay ahead of the end-of-day crunch. If you are all going to the lakeshore at the end of the day, the last shuttle back from the lakeshore in summer has a hard cutoff, do not miss it.

Check winter logistics or summer logistics for current shuttle times and return planning.
