A pilgrimage through the history of Canadian mountaineering. This steady climb leads to a wide tarn (alpine lake) tucked into a high cirque, complete with a historic teahouse and a waterfall.
The Route Visit
The trail is a wide, well-maintained bridle path that switchbacks through a thick forest. It is a consistent uphill grade but offers several resting spots with views.
- Mirror Lake: A ideal halfway point. Look up to see the Big Beehive towering directly above the water.
- The Waterfall: Just before reaching Lake Agnes, you'll pass a 15m waterfall cascading from the lake's outlet.
- The Teahouse: Established in 1901 by the CPR. Enjoy a cup of tea on the deck overlooking the turquoise water.
Safety & Crowd Management
- Start time: This is the most popular hike at Lake Louise. Aim to start your ascent by 8am or earlier. Getting to the lakeshore by 8am means having transport sorted well before that, parking is gone before dawn on peak days.
- Horse Traffic: This is a shared trail with horses. Hikers must yield to horses-step off the trail on the downhill side and remain quiet.
Photography Tips
- Mirror Lake Reflection: The Big Beehive reflects ideally in Mirror Lake on calm mornings.
- The Tea House Deck: The classic shot is looking across the lake from the teahouse stairs.
