Moraine Lake Area

Flat shoreline walk with views of the Valley of the Ten Peaks and Fay Glacier. Quieter than the Rockpile after the first 500 m.

Busy at the dock and Rockpile end. Walk further down the shore to escape the crowd. Moraine Lake requires shuttle - no personal vehicles.

Accessible once Moraine Lake Road opens (typically late May or early June). Shuttle-only access throughout summer.

Good for families

Flat, well-groomed path along the shore; views of Fay Glacier and waterfall at the back. Boardwalks over glacial streams near the far end are the quietest spot. For reflection shots, walk approx. 500 m down; more sheltered from wind.

While the Rockpile gets the glory, the Lakeshore trail offers a peaceful, flat walk that takes you deep into the Valley of the Ten Peaks, away from the sunrise crowds.

The Route Visit

The trail starts at the canoe docks and hugs the northwestern shore. It is a well-maintained, easy path through subalpine forest with frequent openings to the water.

  • The Back of the Lake: The trail ends at a wide glacial delta where several streams feed into the lake from the Fay Glacier.
  • Boardwalks: Near the end, you'll cross several small boardwalks over the sensitive marshy ground.

Safety & Logistics

  • Bear Activity: This area is prime Grizzly habitat. Parks Canada often mandates a "Group of 4" restriction here. Check the signs at the trailhead.
  • Shuttle Access: Remember that Moraine Lake is closed to personal vehicles. Use Parks Canada Shuttle (best value), Roam Transit Route 10 when in season, or Lake Louise Ski Resort/private operators when Parks Canada and Roam are full. See Summer logistics for current options and booking links.

Photography Tips

  • Fay Glacier: The best view of the Fay Glacier is from the very end of the trail.
  • Reflection: Walk about 500m down the trail for the best reflection of the Ten Peaks, as the water is often calmer here than at the docks.
