Old highway route to the Continental Divide; trackset classic-ski lanes and skate lane when maintained. Dog access is restricted; verify current rules.

Locally known as the "Old 1A," this trail follows the original highway route to the British Columbia border. It is one of the most consistent and scenic skate-skiing routes in the park when grooming is in.

Tracksetting & Terrain

  • Grooming: Double trackset with a wide, flat skate lane.
  • Distance: 10 km one-way to the Great Divide arch (20 km return).
  • Elevation: Minimal. Very gentle rolling terrain.

Highlights

The trail ends at the historic wooden arch marking the Continental Divide and the border between Banff and Yoho National Parks. It is an excellent choice for a long, aerobic workout without technical descents. Nearby Great Divide Lodge (now private) marks the historic significance of this route.

Ski Etiquette

  • Dogs: Dog access is commonly restricted on this groomed route; verify the current Parks Canada trail report before bringing one.
  • Mushers: You may encounter dog sled tours near the start of the trail. Give the teams plenty of space and follow the musher's instructions.
