Navigate to Park and RideThe 12.5 km paved Moraine Lake Road climbs from the Lake Louise area into the Valley of the Ten Peaks, ending at Moraine Lake and the Rockpile. Personal vehicles have not been permitted since 2023. In recent seasons, access for vehicles displaying accessibility placards has also ended, so there is no general drive-up option.
The former parking lot often filled before dawn. Restricting personal vehicles reduces congestion, improves safety, and helps protect the surrounding landscape.
Getting there
Most visitors reserve a Parks Canada shuttle from the Lake Louise Park and Ride. Seasonal Roam Transit service and commercial operators provide other options. Overnight guests of Moraine Lake Lodge retain vehicle access.
At the lake, short paths lead to the Rockpile and the longer trail into Larch Valley. The larch season is the busiest access window.
Cycling the road
The road is paved for its full 12.5 km length and provides a sustained uphill ride to the lake. It is especially popular during the shoulder window after snowmelt but before shuttle operations begin, when the road is open to non-motorized traffic. E-bikes are permitted.
There are no services or drinking water along the road. Carry water and bear spray, allow for changing mountain weather, and expect wildlife in grizzly bear habitat.
Season and closures
The road typically opens around the start of June and closes in mid-October. It is gated and snowbound for the rest of the year; opening dates depend on snow clearing and safe conditions.
Confirm current access rules, road dates, and reservations through reservation.pc.gc.ca and Parks Canada before planning around a specific date.
